"If You're Good at Coding Alone, You'll Fail": How Developers Overcome the 'Wall' of Marketing

🫑 3-Line Summary

•
You can see how a developer who believed "all you need is code and a system" overcame the marketing barriers faced after founding a company through technical thinking (data, funnels).
•
We maximized the 'efficiency of a one-person startup' by utilizing Google Analytics as a debugging tool and introducing no-code tools such as ChatGPT and Bubble to shorten development time.
•
Expanding the perspective from being confined to "how to make it" to "how to communicate," it emphasizes that solving customer problems and communicating are the essence of business, rather than technical perfection.

🥦 Insight

•
Coding creates 'functions', but marketing creates 'reasons'.
•
There is a fatal mistake that many entrepreneurs with a background in development make: the misconception that "if the product is good, it will sell itself." I am sorry to say, but a product that no one knows about is like a product that doesn't exist in the world.
•
But don't be intimidated. As the author experienced, marketing is surprisingly similar to development. The process from user entry to payment (Funnel) is an algorithm, and analyzing churn rates is like debugging to catch bugs. You already possess the most powerful marketing tool: 'logical thinking.'
•
Now, step out from behind the monitor and listen to the customer's voice. Instead of boasting about flashy features, propose a 'solution' that solves the customer's problem, even if it is rough around the edges. The moment developers equip themselves with marketing language, that startup will grow at an unstoppable speed.

Are you dreaming of starting a business? I certainly was. As a developer, I wanted to create my own product, and I worked imagining that someday it would be helpful to many people. However, as I started my business on my own, I encountered a huge obstacle called marketing .
Until now, I thought that code and systems alone would be sufficient, but I realized that no matter how outstanding a product is, it is meaningless if people do not know about it . Therefore, as a developer, I would like to share my experiences studying and applying marketing firsthand. If you are a developer preparing to start a business, I hope this post serves as an opportunity to look at marketing in a new light.

The reason I started learning marketing

Why would I want to promote my product?
At first, the word "marketing" felt unfamiliar. I thought that for a developer, code and functionality were important, and that promoting and advertising to people was something far removed from me. However, after giving it some thought, I realized that the products we create are ultimately designed for people . In other words, making the product known to the world is a part of that process.
As I became interested in marketing, I began learning practical approaches rather than theoretical concepts through the book *The Marketing Architect*. For example, the concept of a "funnel" refers to the process of designing the steps involved in a customer's journey from first encountering a product to becoming interested and eventually using it. It is like the entire flow of starting to watch a favorite webtoon, becoming interested, and eventually subscribing to it. This concept was easy to understand because it is similar to the user flow commonly dealt with in software development.
