Book Review

•
I have always had a keen interest in interior design. While working a regular job, I ended up starting a space rental (party room) business as a side hustle. Thanks to word-of-mouth about the well-decorated space, I was earning a decent side income. Then, the COVID-19 era suddenly arrived. As digital transformation and contactless consumption accelerated due to the pandemic, countless offline spaces went out of business. The space I operated was no exception. To revive an offline space with declining foot traffic, I needed something different from what I had done before. It was while I was going through many trials and errors to find that something that I discovered this book.

It was good to have this book as an opportunity to think deeply about how offline spaces should change in the era of living with COVID and the post-COVID era.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was widespread talk that "offline commercial districts will decline and everything will go online." However, looking at the present as we enter the "living with COVID" era, what is the reality? Has it really changed that way? No. People are gathering in offline spaces again. It seems that people desire communication in the real world rather than in the metaverse.

What distinguishes it from the past is that offline spaces have begun to be perceived as "spaces for consuming tastes" and "spaces for experiences." In line with this shift, many unique types of spaces that were previously unseen have emerged. #BlueBottleSamcheongHanok : A time when only three groups of guests quietly enjoy a single space.

What do these spaces have in common? While they are all "Instagrammable," what is more important is that each space possesses its own unique story and a clear concept. This could be the story of the space itself, or the story of the brand operating it. Turning that story into content to perfectly capture people's tastes—I believe this is the direction for the future of offline spaces.
