"We buy 'people,' not companies": The real reason Big Tech invested 4 trillion won

#Ackhaire #AITalentWar #NVIDIA #BigTech

🫑 3-Line Summary

•
Big tech companies are staking their future on 'Acqui-hire,' which aims to secure talent rather than technology, such as Nvidia acquiring an Israeli AI startup for about 4 trillion won.
•
This is a strategy to buy time by absorbing an entire proven team and cleverly circumvent antitrust regulations in a situation where the speed of AI development is of the essence.
•
It is a win-win situation for startups as well, as it reduces the burden of massive development costs, and this trend is expected to extend to the fields of robotics and physical AI.

🥦 Insight

•
It is now the era of 'shopping,' not 'hiring.'
In the past, companies were acquired to purchase promising 'technology' or 'market share,' but now trillions of won are being spent to acquire the 'team' itself, where everyone works in harmony. This is because as the AI technology gap narrows, the outcome ultimately depends on human capabilities—specifically, 'who can build things faster and better.' In the startup scene, becoming a unicorn and going public (IPO) is no longer the only answer; possessing an unrivaled 'talent density' that Big Tech companies covet has also become an excellent exit strategy.

🥄 A spoonful of execution

•
Does our team work well together and possess strong execution capabilities that large corporations would covet? In an era where 'teamwork' goes beyond 'technical prowess' to become corporate value, assess the talent density of your organization.

Global big tech companies are staking everything on "acquihire" to attract artificial intelligence (AI) talent. The talent acquisition war appears to have expanded to the company level, regardless of nationality.
According to Israeli media outlets such as Kalcalist and Reuters on the 31st, Nvidia has agreed to acquire AI21 Labs, an Israeli startup specializing in AI natural language processing, for up to $3 billion (approximately 4.3 trillion won).
AI21 is a company founded in 2017 that was valued at $1.4 billion (approximately 2 trillion won) in 2023. Nvidia is known to have a strong interest in the approximately 200 employees working at AI21.

Why is this important?
Companies that were waging a talent war within the U.S. are now making all-out efforts to secure talent on a company-wide basis, regardless of nationality.
