Book Review

⚠️
For reference, the two figures appearing on the card (Elizabeth Holmes—founder of Theranos, and Sam Bankman-Fried—founder of FTX exchange) are not mentioned in the main text of the book. This is an image I added arbitrarily for illustrative purposes.
•
This book deals with how we make judgments when facing strangers. The author argues that while we believe we can make accurate judgments about strangers, in reality, such judgments are difficult.
•
"The Interpretation of Others" is a book that prompts us to reflect on our judgments and perceptions in conversations with strangers. It explores how to understand strangers through themes such as lies and truth, suspicion and belief, and attitudes and consequences.
•
📙 P217. The people we have all judged correctly are those whose attitudes and results match. The level of their sincerity happens to match their outward appearance.
•
📙 P311. We need to accept the fact that there are practical limits to our search for understanding strangers. We will never know the whole truth. We must be satisfied with a level that falls short of the complete truth. The right way to speak to a stranger is to do so cautiously and humbly.
•
📙 P347. Association theory teaches us the exact opposite. Do not jump to conclusions immediately upon seeing a stranger. Observe the stranger's world.
•
The author argues that the ability to suspect and observe is necessary to understand strangers, and that one must align people's attitudes with results to grasp the truth.
It also states that one should not have the confidence or arrogance to believe that one can understand strangers, but should always deal with them with caution and humility.
Whether someone appears kind on the outside or, conversely, bad on the other hand, one should always keep in mind that their outward appearance may differ from their inner self. Therefore, rather than looking at the person alone, it seems necessary to adopt an attitude of making complex judgments by examining their world (the situation, place, context, etc.).

Be especially careful of people you meet outside of work!!
In my experience, it is not easy to suffer significant personal harm caused by others within a company because there are numerous safety (protective) mechanisms in place.
However, outside the company, I have seen many cases where people suffer significant harm at the hands of others, especially those who are two-faced. This is because the world outside the company is a wilderness without any safety net to protect me.
