Book Review

I am a #maximalist who pursues #minimalism . I rarely throw things away, and I keep items from years, or even decades, attaching some meaning to them rather than discarding them. The same goes for my work. Whenever I want to do something, I just go for it. To put it nicely, this means I have good execution skills; to put it negatively, it means I lack the ability to choose and focus. For this reason, my house is packed with various items, and my days are filled with work, hobbies, and countless appointments.
•
The moment I realized that one room in my house had turned into a storage room filled with unused items. The moment I saw the list in my schedule app packed with unimportant tasks. I thought I had to change.
•
As I kept listing unused second-hand items on Carrot Market and selling them, I found my "Manner Temperature" had risen above 40 degrees before I knew it. By cutting out a few things I considered unimportant from the many tasks I was doing, I gained some spare time. However, it wasn't long before I was buying things again and starting new projects. I had reverted back to my old self.
•
Then, I happened to find this book at a bookstore, and I bought and read it with the intention of trying a minimalist lifestyle again.
•
Generally, when thinking of a minimalist lifestyle, one might picture a white house with plenty of empty space filled with minimal furniture. However, this book presents ways to pursue a minimalist life in a broader sense, extending beyond just the home to the various human relationships and work domains encountered in one's personal life.
•
📙 P17. In a culture that values busy schedules, achievements, and the endless accumulation of material possessions, 'letting go' is not easy. (...) Following the deepest values within ourselves. This choice will free us from pressure, guilt, and extreme fatigue.
•
📙 P46. (The Art of Setting Priorities) To redefine it in light of the purpose of this book, values are 'personal judgments about what is important.'
•
📙 P133. By now, you will understand that a minimalist life does not necessarily mean removing everything and leaving only the bare bones. What we aim for is simply a life based on what is important to you.
•
What I liked about this book was that, unlike many books on minimalism, it does not force a uniform form of emptying. The author did not associate a minimalist lifestyle with frugality or cost-effectiveness. Instead, the criteria for what to discard and what to keep are based on an individual's 'values.' The message is that one should pursue a customized minimalist lifestyle tailored to one's personal values, rather than a standardized minimalist lifestyle that is the same for everyone.

Through this book, I had the opportunity to reflect once again on my values. As I think about what is truly important in my life, I intend to start practicing small things one by one to build my own #minimalistlife .
